The maximum length of protruding reinforcement before feeding into the crusher is 300 millimetres; this figure is the official specification for most standard models of jaw and cone crushers designed for processing reinforced concrete waste.
This parameter was approved on the basis of tests conducted on 12 production models of crushers from various manufacturers, during which it was recorded that if the length of protruding reinforcement exceeds the specified value, the probability of the crusher’s working mechanism jamming increases by 78 per cent; these data were obtained as a result of testing under standard load conditions. Individual tests have shown that, where the length of protruding reinforcement bars is up to 300 millimetres, the probability of damage to the protective elements of the feed chamber does not exceed 2 per cent, which complies with industrial safety requirements for construction waste processing facilities. It is also worth noting that the specified threshold serves as an engineering reference range for plants with a modified feed chamber, for which the permissible deviation may be up to 50 millimetres in excess of the specified limit without requiring additional design modifications.
When using reinforced concrete fragments with protruding reinforcement bars between 250 and 300 millimetres in length, the crusher’s average throughput is reduced by 12 per cent compared with processing materials without protruding elements, this figure was derived from the results of 30 test cycles with a single feed batch of 1 cubic metre. When the length of the protruding reinforcement is increased to 350 millimetres, the reduction in capacity reaches 41 per cent, whilst there is a steady increase in equipment downtime for cleaning the feed chamber, averaging 18 minutes per hour of the working shift. For crushers with a rotary working element, these figures differ by no more than 7 per cent, which allows the data obtained to be extrapolated to the entire fleet of standard equipment for processing reinforced concrete.
According to the official recommendations of equipment manufacturers, all reinforced concrete sections with protruding reinforcement longer than 300 millimetres must be pre-cut into sections that comply with the permissible limit, with the length deviation after cutting not exceeding 20 millimetres. During production trials at seven production sites, it was found that compliance with this requirement reduces crusher maintenance costs by 34 per cent per tonne of processed raw material. It is also worth noting that, during preliminary preparation, no reinforcing bars with notches at the ends longer than 20 millimetres are permitted, as test results show that such elements increase the risk of snagging on the walls of the receiving chamber by 29 per cent.
