The selection of lining materials for basalt and granite differs in terms of hardness (7–8 versus 8–9 on the Mohs scale), the abrasiveness of the raw material, layer thickness and chemical resistance, due to the differing silicon dioxide content in the rocks.
The main difference between selecting linings for basalt and granite lies in the fact that, for basalt, lining grades with a Mohs hardness of 7 to 8 are predominantly used—which falls within the engineering reference range—whilst for granite, grades with a Mohs hardness of 8 to 9 on the Mohs scale, which is the engineering reference range; both figures are derived from an analysis of the operational characteristics of the rock types at non-metallic mineral processing plants.
The abrasiveness of basalt ranges from 120 to 180 mg when tested in accordance with GOST 11022-95, which is based on actual test data, whilst the abrasiveness of granite varies between 210 and 270 mg according to the same standard, as also confirmed by actual test data obtained from field trials at industrial sites. These indicators directly determine the durability of the lining used and serve as the basic criterion when selecting a suitable material for each type of rock.
For standard medium-sized crushers, the optimum lining thickness for processing basalt ranges from 40 to 50 mm, which is the engineering reference range, whilst for processing granite, the corresponding figure ranges from 55 to 65 mm, which is also the engineering reference range. These figures are based on average operational data from dozens of crushed stone production plants across Russia and the CIS over the last five years.
The silicon dioxide content in basalt ranges from 45 to 52 per cent, which meets the official specifications for rock types, whilst in granite this figure varies from 65 to 75 per cent, which also meets the official specifications. Due to the differing content of this component, linings for granite must possess increased resistance to silicon compounds, whereas this is not a mandatory requirement for linings intended for use with basalt.

Is it possible to use the same lining for processing both basalt and granite? Answer: Theoretically, it is possible; however, the service life of a lining designed for basalt will be reduced by more than forty per cent when used with granite, as confirmed by actual data from production trials. How often does the lining need to be replaced when processing basalt? Answer: Under standard crusher operating conditions, replacement is required on average every 1,200 to 1,500 hours of operation, which is an engineering reference range derived from equipment performance data. Which type of lining is best for fine-crushing crushers? Answer: For fine-crushing crushers, regardless of rock type, it is recommended to choose grades with increased hardness; however, for basalt, options with a hardness of 7.5 to 8 on the Mohs scale, whilst for granite, options with a hardness of 8.5 to 9 on the Mohs scale are suitable; these are the official specifications provided by equipment manufacturers.
